Airplane cabin noise for sleep

Plenty of people say they never sleep better than on a long-haul flight. Once the seatbelt sign goes off and the engines settle into cruise, the cabin fills with a deep, even roar that seems to swallow every other sound. Airplane cabin noise recreates that feeling at home, and it is one of the most-played sounds in the whole Chill Machine catalogue.

Airplane Cabin White Noise Jet Sounds

What airplane noise actually is

At cruising altitude, the sound inside a cabin is a blend of engine hum, air rushing over the fuselage and the cabin's own ventilation system. Acoustically it behaves a lot like a mix of brown and white noise: there is a strong low rumble underneath and a soft, airy hiss on top. That combination is why it feels both "heavy" and "smooth". It covers low household sounds like traffic and boilers as well as higher sounds like voices from the next room.

Because it changes so little from minute to minute, your brain quickly stops paying attention to it. That is the same reason fans and white-noise machines are popular, but many listeners find a jet cabin more immersive and less hissy than plain white noise.

How to use cabin noise at bedtime

Great for travel and naps too

Ironically, cabin noise is also handy when travelling. In hotels, trains or a friend's sofa, a familiar sound can make an unfamiliar room feel calmer. Download the album in your music app before you go so it works offline. For daytime naps, set a timer of 20 to 40 minutes.

Babies and cabin noise

Some parents use cabin-style noise for babies as well. If you do, keep the speaker well away from the cot, use the lowest volume that works, and read our safe listening guidance. For gentler options, see pink noise for baby sleep.

Prefer something different? Try fan and extractor-fan noise, the deeper brown noise, or browse every release at Chill Machine.
